This has been an interesting topic to follow. Obama has been a reluctant supporter of NASA from the beginning of his political career. Before the presidential race even begun, he was claiming to be in support of budget cuts from NASA. As time progressed he started showing that he was still sympathetic to NASA but skeptical of where the program was headed. He argued that children today aren’t as inspired by space exploration as they were 20 years ago. In the months preceding election day it seemed he began to jump on board with NASA. He said he would support an additional $2 billion in annual funding. Some people speculated that it was an election gimmick to get voters in Florida. Whether that’s true or not it seems once again there is issues between NASA and Obama. In a recent meeting between Obama’s transition team and NASA there was a dispute over the constellation project. Obama was considering dropping the Ares rocket research. I tend to partially agree with Obama here. If you read my space elevator entry you know I am against the constellation project but I don’t think cutting funding is the answer. Shifting funding to conceptually revolutionary projects would spark interest in America’s youth again and that is exactly what Obama wanted in the first place.

  1. I concur. Sinking the major part of NASA’s resources into a waning technology is not a good use of precious resources, unless it is directly vital in the construction of a space elevator.

  2. Paul and Gfellow,

Thanks for the support of the SE project.

Nope it is flat-out politically impossible to reassign NASA to tackle the Space Elevator. Remember, our project sprang from a NASA grant, and we tried and tried and tried to keep it under the NASA umbrella. They didn’t want it.

So we went independent. It was damn hard, and in the end, it almost bankrupted me, but we are still making progress. But I can assure you, NASA will never run the project. Its the same sort of task as asking GM to design and build airplanes. They have the engineering skill, but not the willpower or cash to transition.

Obama is a space wildcard. You are right, he was initially going to cut $5B from NASA to pay for his education agenda, but then changed his mind.

I think it is NOT an election ploy, and that he is seriously considering space development as a economic engine that can jumpstart our economy, infrastructure and energy policy.

Is Obama going to build an Elevator to Space – no, probably not. Will he build a Space Based Solar Power array – maybe. And if he does that, then EVERYTHING changes.

So, I’d say, keep your fingers crossed. The man has a tough 4 years ahead of him, and an economy in the toilet and world credibility at an all time low. So I really have no idea what he will do with/for/about space.

But if you want to follow along with what my team and I are doing to build an Elevator to Space, I am regularly on Twitter.com/mlaine.

Thanks for your interest. Take care. mjl
